The Utah Jazz’s NBA season is difficult to explain to Finns.
Right from the start, it was clear that the team’s management wants it to lose as much as possible, while the players, of course, try to do the opposite.
December has been particularly tight. Out of nine matches, the Jazz have won only three. The team is solidly at the bottom of its division, and the gap to the playoff line grows practically every week.
For Finns, the situation looks even more worrying because Lauri Markkanen is losing his position as his team’s number one gun.
Of course, he was the best on the court in Saturday night’s away win over Brooklyn, but even then, only three of his 13 three-point shots went for the ball.
Earlier in December, Jazz colleagues Jordan Clarkson, John Collins, Keyonte George, Collin Sexton and Walker Kessler had all scored more points than the Finn in different matches.
– Lauri’s throws are really small. He is quite effective with the throws he gets, Ruuttu’s NBA commentator and head coach of Lahti Basketball Kristian Palotie start.
– It is difficult to say how much this is due to teammates, the attack system or Lauri himself.
“Small sample size”
Measured by scoring average, Markkanen is still the Jazz’s best player. The pace of 19.0 points is also far from the averages of the previous two seasons (23.2 and 25.6).
Markkanen’s autumn has been plagued by mysterious back pains. It is completely impossible to say how much they still slow down the Finn’s point production.
As usual, the NBA is running at full capacity even during the Christmas holidays. Before the turn of the year, the Jazz will face Cleveland and Portland away, as well as Philadelphia and Denver at home.
– Lauri is still dealing with a small sample size issue. Even 40 matches in the NBA is a small sample size, especially when there are so many games, Palotie continues.
– There is no reason to worry here. If something is broken, as it was with Lauri, it may affect it for a couple of months – and whoops, 30 matches have already been played in it.

Now, however, the club’s main focus has perhaps shifted to teammates. According to Palotie, the selection supports Jazz’s return to the top.
– The organization wants to see how the young players develop and what they are capable of. I don’t like to say that Lauri is not the highest priority, but in a way it is true.
“Many different routes”
Palotie wants to underline that even though Markkanen is Jazz’s brightest star, it would be foolish to count the entire hope of success on one card.
– However, it is quite unlikely that the Jazz would be a championship candidate team with Lauri – unless some exceptionally good luck happens in the upcoming draft.
– The Jazz’s main priority is to assemble a winning team at some point, and that can mean many different avenues.
This year it seems to pass by the Finn. In the matches during the Christmas period, it’s worth following Markkanen’s throwing numbers and points tally closely.
– Yes, they are worth following. How much is because the ball doesn’t find him or teammates don’t set good enough screens?

The numbers also tell a lot about the direction in which Jazz management’s attention is turning.
– I think there is a bit of everything here. It’s not wrong to hope that Lauri would be more selfish in certain situations, Palotie reflects.
– But the Utah coaching staff and Lauri know better whether it is useful for him or his development.
