Residents of 24 houses near the Agrifirm factory in Meppel appear to have been living there illegally for years, but that is about to change: ‘How do they come to be able to say something like that. You live illegally in your own house
Of all the current residents at Noordeinde in Meppel, 69-year-old Jacob Wind has lived there the longest. He has now lived in the street for 41 years, and enjoys it. Until last year it turned out that he was living there illegally. Just like all other residents.
“You get the feeling that you are no longer Dutch, but a foreigner. In your own country, your own home,” says Wind. “Last year I suffered quite the blow. Then I ended up in hospital.” He had a heart attack. “Now things are going well again, but it wasn’t fun anymore.” The message caused him a lot of stress. “It affected me a lot.”
