Before the last game of the year, Bayer Leverkusen gave their fans an early Christmas present. The German champions announced the contract extension of central defender Piero Hincapié before the duel with SC Freiburg. The 22-year-old signed early for two more years until 2029. The Ecuadorian came to Leverkusen in 2021 and has played 141 games since then. During this time, he increased his market value from 8 million to 40 million euros, making him one of the top five most valuable central defenders in the Bundesliga.

“Piero Hincapié came to us in 2021 as a 19-year-old talent. But even back then you could see how confident he was in his abilities. Today Piero duels on equal terms with world-class professionals like Lionel Messi or Mo Salah. He has earned respect worldwide. “It’s all the better for us that Piero has now decided to join Bayer 04 again in the long term,” said sports director Simon Rolfes.

Hincapié added: “Bayer 04 Leverkusen has become like a family to me after three and a half years. The club and the fans are special and we have a team that showed last season what is possible when you stick together unconditionally. I am really happy that they are happy with me and are giving me the chance to continue to shape the future of this club.”
