After a bitter slap in Bremen
Manager leaves the future open: Union coach wobbles

Union Berlin hasn’t won eight games in a row. On Saturday there was a bitter 1:4 defeat in Bremen. The mood gradually changes.
It’s been almost exactly two months since Union Berlin last won in the Bundesliga. On October 20th, the “Irons” won 2-0 at Holstein Kiel and jumped to fifth place in the table. In the following eight match days there were three draws and five defeats – the last one this Saturday in Bremen in the 1:4 against Werder. Union now spends Christmas in twelfth place.
Now even coach Bo Svensson is wobbling. At least managing director Horst Heldt left the Dane’s future open. “We have to let that sink in for now. We have a tendency that is not good or satisfactory,” said Heldt after the game in Bremen. “It’s a short Christmas now, so we first have to collect ourselves and let the impressions sink in. And then we’ll meet again on January 2nd.”
It remains to be seen whether Svensson will still be a coach. What speaks in favor of the Dane is that after the strong start to the season, Union is currently seven points ahead of the relegation place. However, 1. FC Heidenheim can still score points on Sunday. There is also a risk of a point being deducted because of the lighter scandal against Bochum. The weak performances of the past few weeks speak against Svensson.
After the winter break, Union will finish the first half of the season against Heidenheim and FC Augsburg. “January is off to a crisp start with Heidenheim and Augsburg and the opponents we scored points against at the start of the season,” said Heldt. “We have to knock the ball over, but we are capable of doing that. Everyone is challenged now. First and foremost, the team.”
