In an emotional interview, the professional soccer player speaks openly about her relationship with her famous father – and doesn’t say anything good about him.

Trinity Rodman, the daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, describes her difficult relationship with her father in a moving interview on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. She explained that he had shown little interest in her outside of the public eye.

“He’s not a father,” said the 22-year-old Washington Spirit forward. “Maybe organic, but nothing else.” She and her brother DJ tried to live with him, but his lifestyle – parties around the clock and changing acquaintances – made this impossible. “He loves the spotlight,” she added.

A large portion of the interview revolved around Dennis Rodman’s frequent absences from Trinity’s life. During his basketball career, Rodman was known not only for his defensive play and rebounding strength, but also for his extravagant life. Even after his career ended in 2006, after a short stint in Great Britain, little changed. Instead, he had to seek treatment for alcohol abuse.

In the interview, Trinity called her father an “alcoholic.” Despite all the family difficulties, however, she continued to feel the need to protect his public image. “We never want him to look bad,” Trinity explained. “And that means that we bottle up a lot of things. I was never able to really let out the anger that I suppressed.”

This hope for a better relationship was always disappointed. “Every time I thought, ‘This could be a new beginning.’ But then months went by, eventually even years. And I just thought, ‘Okay, cool.'” Today, Trinity doesn’t even have her father’s phone number anymore – partly because he keeps changing it, partly because Trinity doesn’t see the need to keep in touch to maintain.

Although Dennis has recently tried to reach her, Trinity shows little interest. “He’s called me several times in the past few weeks from a number in Texas. I didn’t even know he lived in Texas – that was new to me,” she concluded.
