Economics seems to be a field that mainly focuses on the rational or even selfish side of people. But behavioral economists have also done a lot of research into when people are selfless. What do these studies tell us about how generous the Dutch are? Are rich people more selfish than poor people? And isn’t altruism secretly a bit selfish?
But what we also want to know is: why can we deduct our gifts and donations from taxes – and who benefits from this? What can the government do to encourage good behavior? Should the government play a role in this at all?
