FC Bayern is planning a special honor for Franz Beckenbauer. A club boss revealed exactly what this should look like at a fan club event.
FC Bayern will honor Franz Beckenbauer, who died at the beginning of the year, with another grand gesture. The record champions will host the Franz Beckenbauer Cup in Munich next year. CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen revealed this on Sunday on the sidelines of his visit to the “Red-White-China” fan club in Dietfurt.
Bayern want to organize the tournament on the occasion of his 125th birthday on March 17, 2025 and dedicate it to Beckenbauer. The professional teams of Bayern and the other clubs will then be in the middle of the crucial phase of the season. Therefore, a legendary team from FC Bayern should compete against five other teams – two German and three international teams.
FC Bayern recently honored Beckenbauer with a historic gesture, thereby providing the emotional highlight at the general meeting. President Herbert Hainer announced to the assembled Bayern members that the record champions would never again award Beckenbauer’s shirt number 5 in honor of the “Emperor”.
The members approved this proposal with great applause. Beckenbauer’s widow Heidi and his son Joel also came on stage to announce this historic honor, which Franz Beckenbauer was the first former Bayern player to receive, and were visibly moved.
Heidi Beckenbauer cried. Club patron Uli Hoeneß, who was sitting right next to her in the hall, also fought back tears. January 7th marks the first anniversary of Beckenbauer’s death, who died at the age of 78.
Independently of Bayern, the German Football Association (DFB) and the German football league are also planning a Franz Beckenbauer Cup. According to a report in the “Bild-Zeitung”, the Supercup, i.e. the duel between the German champions and the cup winners, will be held under this name in the future – for the first time on August 16, 2025. In the coming year there will be two events bear the name Franz Beckenbauer Cup.
