VfL Bochum officially lodges an objection after the scandalous game against Union Berlin

VfL Bochum lodged an objection against the rating of the Bundesliga game at Union Berlin (1:1) within the deadline. The German Football Association (DFB) announced this on Monday.

During the bottom of the table’s game at the Alte Försterei last Saturday, goalkeeper Patrick Drewes was hit in the head by a lighter from the Union block and was unable to continue playing.

The game was interrupted for a long time after the incident before it was concluded with a non-aggression pact. Since Bochum’s substitution options had been exhausted, striker Philipp Hofmann lined up in goal.

The DFB sports court must now decide on the objection. In a first step, statements from those involved are requested. After the statements have been submitted and evaluated, the sports court will decide on the further course of the proceedings. “We are of the opinion that the game should have been stopped according to the rules,” said VfL managing director Ilja Kaenzig. “If you interpret the rules,” it can be assumed that the score will be converted into a victory for Bochum.

Drewes complained of malaise, nausea and headaches after the hit. He was taken to a hospital for further examinations. After unremarkable tests, he returned to Bochum that night.

Regardless of the objection, the DFB control committee has initiated an investigation against Union Berlin because of the lighter throwing. The association will also be contacted here for a statement.
