How do you recognize fake news? Hilversum first grade classes are now being taught about this

For some it is a piece of cake, for others it is a major task: recognizing fake news. This has now become a little easier for the students of Hilfertsheem College. They received their first lesson at the Sound and Vision media museum on how to find out whether something is real or fake.

“Children are online all day long. Sometimes for more than 6 hours,” says Helen Meijer, Head of Education at Sound and Vision. “It is super important that they know how to deal with this. That you should assess the news that an influencer makes differently than the news made by a journalist. That is what we try to teach the children here.”

That doesn’t always go well. Many students at Hilfertsheem College admit that they have fallen for fake news: “I once saw a video in which the Eiffel Tower was on fire. I believed that at first, but later I heard on the news that it was not true.”

What exactly the students learn on such a day can be seen in the video above.
