Eric Jonckheere from Kapelle-op-den-Bos, chairman of the Belgian Association of Asbestos Victims (ABEVA), died on Friday at the age of 66 from the consequences of an aggressive and incurable asbestos-related cancer. He is the fifth member of the Jonckheere family to die from the disease, after his parents and two brothers. “There are now new negotiations, but it is very bitter that he is no longer allowed to experience that himself,” says former politician Valerie Van Peel, who, together with Jonckheere, wanted to break the omerta surrounding the asbestos tragedy.
