With a win, 1. FC Kaiserslautern would have jumped to the top of the table. But the “Red Devils” were far from three points.
Bundesliga relegated Darmstadt 98 defeated 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the top game of the second division. The “Lilien” won 5-1 on Saturday evening, dominating the action for the full 90 minutes. The guests from Kaiserslautern missed the jump to the top of the table, which would have been possible with a win. But the sobering performance at the Böllenfalltor ruined this goal.
Killian Corredor (33rd/88th), Fraser Hornby (45th + 2/73rd) with his goals number five and six of the season and substitute Luca Marseiler (62nd) scored for Darmstadt, which is now up to nine games without a defeat moved two points closer to second place. For Lautern, the series of four wins in a row and seven games without defeat ended painfully. Daniel Hanslik (84th) scored the consolation goal.
The FCK acted very passively in the first half of the game, and even switching to a back four didn’t provide any more access. Darmstadt lost its best goalscorer early on when Isac Lidberg had to go down with a thigh injury (14th). “This really hurts us,” said injured captain Fabian Holland on Sky.
Corredor scored the 1-0 for the Lilies with a header after a half-court cross from Sergio Lopez. Lautern’s goalkeeper Julian Krahl prevented Marseiler from making it 2-0 (40′), but was powerless when his defense allowed Hornby to shoot from the edge of the penalty area.
After the break, the guests acted a little more forcefully and had chances. But a mistake by Krahl allowed Marseiler to make the preliminary decision, Hornby followed up with Marseiler’s pass.
