Super Saturday food bank campaign yields 2678 crates of food

A total of 2,678 crates of non-perishable food were collected during the Super Saturday campaign for food banks throughout the province. The yield is comparable to that of last year.

Traditionally, a large food bank campaign is held at supermarkets in Drenthe on a Saturday in December. Flyers are distributed by volunteers from food banks, churches and members of various service clubs, such as the Lions, the Rotary and the Soroptimists. The idea is to collect as much food as possible so that the food banks can provide their clients with groceries again next year.

“This is unprecedented. Everyone is euphoric.” Chairman Henk Brouwer of the food bank in Hoogeveen is overjoyed with the proceeds of the annual food bank campaign. The food bank in Hoogeveen can make progress with 812 crates of food for the time being. This much was collected today from 20 supermarkets in and around Hoogeveen. According to Brouwer it was also necessary. “The shelves were very empty. I think we can continue with this until the spring.” In Hoogeveen, four hundred people use the food bank.
