They knew each other since the 90s. Now Sven Hannawald has said goodbye to former national ski jumping coach Wolfgang Steiert.
Former ski jumping star Sven Hannawald said goodbye to his former coach with emotional words. “There are days in life that, unfortunately, come to all of us at some point,” Hannawald began his entry on Instagram. He then turned directly to the former national ski jumping coach Wolfgang Steiert.
“Dear Wolfi, I’m just glad that our paths crossed back in the early 90s and that you took me by the hand,” Hannawald wrote about a picture together with Steiert on Instagram.
The former national coach died on Thursday at the age of 61. This was announced by the German Ski Association (DSV), citing the former coach’s immediate surroundings. The cause of death is unknown.
In his contribution on Friday, the Olympic champion emphasized how important coaches are for the development of athletes: “Coaches are the most important people who ultimately bring success to people like me.” Hannawald was grateful and proud of the time they spent together and their greatest success, which no one could take away from them. The message ends with the farewell words: “Rest in peace,” said the 49-year-old.
