It hasn’t happened since 27 April 2014 that three brothers scored on the same day: the record dates back to Mancosu between Serie B and C

For 24 hours the screens of their smartphones have continued to light up continuously, the cascade of notifications between WhatsApp and Instagram is endless. The Esposito brothers had another incredible day: all scoring, like at the end of September when they scored on the same weekend. This time they managed it within a few minutes of each other. Sebastiano’s brace with Empoli against Verona, Salvatore’s brace with Spezia against Cittadella. Then the header from the youngest, Francesco Pio. “I saw my brothers’ goals, but mine are better,” Seba joked. The first messages in the family chat – which includes parents, cousins, uncles and sister Annamaria – arrived when the boys were still on the pitch. They responded to their return to the locker room by starting the usual video call to celebrate together despite the distance. Even in the Cicerone district of Castellammare, the neighborhood where the Espositos grew up, lifelong friends lit fireworks in the street to celebrate. For them it was an unforgettable Sunday, but in our football it is not the first time. It has already happened that three brothers scored on the same day.

Like the Mancosu

To find the latest precedent we have to go back ten years. It was April 27, 2014, between Serie B and C the Mancosu played. Marco, who wore the Benevento shirt, scored on a penalty against Viareggio, Marcello scored against Pro Patria with Pavia. While 24 hours earlier Matteo had been the first of the three to celebrate with Trapani against Juve Stabia in Serie B. To the delight of father Mimmo, former footballer in Eccellenza, and mother Paoletta. The boys toured Italy scoring in all categories. Two years earlier, in 2012, they had already done it: Marcello, however, was among the amateurs. A clarification due only for statistics. Marco was a star of Lecce, with the Salento club he reached Serie A with the Salento club. Matteo, after a long apprenticeship, granted himself an experience at Montreal in MLS, while Marcello continued to make the difference especially among the small clubs of the their Sardinia.

The Espositos’ dream

Yet, until the age of 8, Marco didn’t want to hear about football: “During his first training session – his father Mimmo said – he was uncoordinated and disoriented. I convinced myself that this sport was not for him. But I was wrong.” From his debut with a goal in Serie A with the Cagliari shirt against Ascoli to the one with Casiraghi’s Italy U21 team. Today the Mancosu brothers met again: Marco coaches the U18 rossoblù, Matteo follows the U15. Marcello, on the other hand, still enjoys himself on the provincial fields, but has preferred books: he has a degree in Biological Sciences and works as a scientific informant. The Espositos also continue to be protagonists. Sebastiano has 4 goals in 11 Serie A games, Salvatore has reached 5 goals and 7 assists in 16 games. Bomber Pio, born in 2005, is aiming for double figures in his second year among professionals and has 8 goals. The shared dream is to wear the national team shirt to give yet another joy to their family. Maybe, one day, even end their careers together at Juve Stabia: their hometown team. Father Agostino and mother Flavia prefer not to comment on their boys’ magical moment. They want to leave them alone to play and have fun, like they did as children on the concrete pitch in the Cicerone district. Who knows which of the three will have to pay for dinner this time.
