1. FC Magdeburg is the most successful team in the 2nd league – when it comes to away games. Preußen Münster already had their sixth win in a foreign stadium. Baris Atik celebrated his goal comeback in the 12th minute to make it 2-1 (1-1). After Joshua Mees’ equalizer (38th), Marcus Mathisen (54th) headed the guests into the top 5 of the league.

The game had become very special for Atik early on. After the offensive player’s patience was tested several times this season due to many failures, he was rewarded for his efforts for the first time. After a cross from Jean Hugonet, Atik, who almost single-handedly led Magdeburg to the second division in 2021/22 with 41 goals, scored his first goal of the season (12th).

Mees is allowed to behead completely freely

However, the leadership did not ensure that the guests gained any security. Up to that moment they controlled the game, and in the first few minutes afterwards the ball was mainly in the Magdeburg ranks – but then Münster came in much better. The newcomers subsequently created a few half-chances, but it wasn’t until the 38th minute that things really became dangerous – but they were successful.

Münster bridged the entire pitch over a few stops and finally Mees converted a buttery cross from Charalambos Makridis from close range to equalize. Prussia had increasingly earned it with a courageous performance after going behind.

Münster wants to quickly counter Mathisen’s goal

After the break, Magdeburg made it clear again why it belongs to the top group of the 2nd league and Münster is fighting to stay in the league. Coach Christian Titz’s team dominated again and had the first opportunity of the second half through Martijn Kaars, who finished unplaced (53′). The following corner then landed indirectly at Mohammed El Hankouri, whose perfectly timed cross was headed by Mathisen to give the FCM the lead again (54′).

Münster didn’t let themselves be upset this time either, but Mees missed the great chance to equalize from eleven meters (61′). And Makridis also failed to get the ball into the opponent’s goal after a great solo (63′).

The Atik drama continues

However, a little later there was frustration on the Magdeburg side – because Atik was injured again. The 29-year-old grabbed his back thigh after an action and had to be substituted. Goal comeback, but out again – now it was up to his colleagues to at least give him the win.

Kaars missed the great opportunity in the 84th minute to significantly increase the probability of this happening; the striker, like Bryan Teixeira a little later, was denied by Johannes Schenk in the Prussian goal (86th). However, this didn’t pay off because the defense had relatively little trouble with the hosts’ final offensive.

Magdeburg thus underlined its strength away from home, celebrated its sixth win away from home and moved up to fifth place in the overall table. Münster, on the other hand, remains second to last and has missed a great opportunity to gain a better starting position in the relegation battle.
