3rd league: VfB Lübeck separates from coach Florian Schnorrenberg

After the 0-3 defeat in the basement duel of the 3rd league at SC Freiburg II, VfB Lübeck pulled the ripcord and parted ways with coach Florian Schnorrenberg. The 46-year-old has only been in office with the promoted team since the end of December.

After only one success in nine games under Schnorrenberg, those responsible at VfB were now forced to act. On Monday they announced the Siegen native’s release. After a “thorough analysis of the sporting developments in recent weeks” by the board and in consultation with the supervisory board, as stated in a club statement.

The former coach of Halleschen FC was hired shortly before the turn of the year. He had inherited promotion coach Lukas Pfeiffer at Lohmühle. As before Schnorrenberg’s commitment, the previous assistant coach Bastian Reinhardt will take over on an interim basis until further notice.

Sports director Harms: “Change is inevitable”

Sports director Sebastian Harms described the decision as “essential in order to get the team back to the level of performance it has already shown”. Nothing has changed in the assessment that Schnorrenberg is a “very good coach”. Unfortunately, his decisions – even those that appeared courageous and unpopular – “did not lead to the lasting success that we wanted to achieve.”

Only one win in nine games

After a good start with four points from the first two games under Schnorrenberg, the Schleswig-Holstein team’s performance curve was increasingly pointing downwards. VfB lost five of the following seven games.

Among other things, there was a 2:7 defeat at SG Dynamo Dresden and now on Saturday the 0:3 at the bottom of the table Freiburg II. The gap between Lübeck and the non-relegation places is already eight points nine game days before the end of the season.

Schnorrenberg wishes VfB “all the best”

Schnorrenberg emphasized: “I hope that this decision will calm the situation down and the team can get the sense of success they need again on Saturday.” Then the second-to-last in the table welcomes second-placed Jahn Regensburg.

“The six points from nine games and especially the away record are not the expectations I had,” said the 46-year-old football teacher and added: “I wish VfB all the best for the future and especially that the club manages to take the next steps economically and infrastructurally in order to establish itself as a professional location.”
