The emergency services received the report around 8 p.m. A police spokesperson told NH that it was probably a one-sided accident. “The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries,” she said.
It is not yet known how the driver could have fallen. “We still have to investigate what exactly happened,” the spokesperson said. The tunnel is temporarily closed to all traffic.
The area around the tunnel was recently overhauled to make it safer. Local residents and users of the tunnel have been concerned about road safety at the tunnel for a long time.
Concerns about safety
Safety concerns around the tunnel already increased shortly after its opening in 2022. The adjacent primary school De Wilgetoren also sounded the alarm about the safety of the students.
