Coach Roger Schmidt, who has come under criticism in Portugal, is not concerned with an early departure from Benfica Lisbon. “I don’t think so,” the German coach replied on Wednesday when asked whether he would leave Benfica at the end of the season if he didn’t win a title. The 56-year-old has a contract with the Portuguese record champions until 2026.
After two defeats in a row at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the cup semi-final (1:2) and at FC Porto (0:5) in the league, there is speculation in the Portuguese media about Schmidt’s future (Transfermarkt reported). The former coach of Bayer 04 Leverkusen, among others, is fully focused on the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday against Glasgow Rangers (6.45 p.m.).
“When I extended my contract, I didn’t expect that we would win all the titles in the next three years,” said Schmidt. Despite recent disappointments, he can still win the treble with Benfica. “I am convinced that we will have a good reaction. We are fighting for every title.” To date, he has won the championship and the 2023 Supercup with the “Eagles”.
