Carlo Ancelotti has ticked off the strange draw at FC Valencia, and last weekend’s referee anger should no longer play a role before the Champions League duel with RB Leipzig at Real Madrid. “What happened, happened,” emphasized the 64-year-old. The second leg in the round of 16 of the premier class on Wednesday (9:00 p.m./DAZN) is extremely important: “Our dream is to stay in the competition.”
On Saturday, the Royals were denied the winning goal in the league in Valencia (2-2). Right in the middle of Brahim Diaz’s cross and thus directly in front of Jude Bellingham’s goal to make it 3-2, referee Gil Manzano blew the whistle for the game in the ninth minute of stoppage time. Afterwards there was great excitement, the ex-Dortmunder Bellingham was shown the red card.
“He is a player who tries to give everything on the pitch, he does it very well,” said Ancelotti. He himself was of the opinion that the red card for Bellingham was “the wrong decision”: “He was a little frustrated, but he didn’t offend anyone.”
Real had a “small advantage” against Leipzig after winning 1-0 in the first leg, but it wasn’t over yet, warned Ancelotti: “We have to show our best level from the first minute.”
