The joy and redemption were great. 1899 Hoffenheim won 2-1 (2-0) in a thrilling duel against Werder Bremen. Particularly noticeable this Sunday evening (March 3, 2024): Maximilian Beier. The 1899 attacker once again showed his great potential.

The 21-year-old has already scored eleven and twelve goals this season, which has certainly been immortalized once again in the notebook of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was sitting in the stands as a spectator.

The Hoffenheim team can now continue to hope that they will qualify for an international competition, while the Bremen team, for whom Skelly Alvero scored (90th + 2), are in no man’s land in the table.

Beier with a volley

Both teams started the game cautiously. After six minutes, the hosts suddenly increased the tempo noticeably, surprised the Hanseatic League and created several good opportunities.

First Maximilian Beier had a shot chance, which Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer was able to fend off. Just seconds later the goalkeeper was there again when Ihlas Bebou shot brutally from ten meters. The resulting corner made the Hoffenheim team celebrate. Beier scored with a volley to make it 1-0 (8th).

Bremen turns things around

Bremen didn’t really get into the game at first. The Hoffenheim team seemed more enthusiastic and significantly more dangerous (scoring goals). Coach Ole Werner’s team had to survive one attack after the other with luck and skill, while the Hanseatic team initially couldn’t record any notable offensive action. However, Felix Agu (21st) suddenly had the chance to equalize, but he missed from close range.

Then the tide turned. Werder woke up and attacker Marvin Ducksch had the next big chance to equalize. First a Hoffenheim player (26th) was able to clear on the goal line. The Werder attacker was unlucky again after 38 minutes when he hit the post from twelve meters.

Hoffenheim strikes again

And while Bremen hoped to equalize before the break, Hoffenheim struck mercilessly just before the half-time whistle. Once again it was Beier who scored Hoffenheim’s second goal after a brilliant counterattack and after a pass from Bebou to make it 2-0 (44th).

After the break, Bremen tried everything to score the next goal. Agu (50th) had a great opportunity to score early on, he shot from an unmarked position, but almost miserably, well over the Hoffenheim goal.

Bülter has to leave the field

The Hoffenheim team then had to cope with a moment of shock after 72 minutes: referee Matthias Jöllenbeck showed 1899 offensive player Marius Bülter (73′) yellow-red after he fouled Jonathan Schmid.

Bremen tried to throw everything forward, but their shots remained too imprecise until shortly before the end. Substitute Justin Njinmah, in particular, lost his nerve twice in front of the Hoffenheim goal in the final phase. It was Alvero who scored the goal with a backheel from close range. But it wasn’t enough for Bremen anymore.

Hoffenheim in Frankfurt, Bremen against Dortmund

The Hoffenheimers have to play against Eintracht Frankfurt next Sunday (5.30 p.m.). Werder Bremen welcomes Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening (6.30 p.m.).
