«Splowed the first president of the Sardinia Region», he said enthusiastically Alessandra Todde winner of the regional election round: the candidate of the 5 Star Movement supported by the Democratic Party, with a few thousand votes more than Paolo Truzzu, former mayor of Cagliari supported by the right-wing coalition, brought home the much hoped-for result.
Alessandra Todde wins in Sardinia
But the result achieved by Todde is not just one, because with today’s victory he also achieved that of being there first woman to become president of Sardinia. Not bad for a politician who, when she emerged as the leader of the M5S at the European elections in 2019, only took a bunch of preferences without leaving any indelible mark.
However, five years later, Todde enters the history of the Movement: she is the first president of the 5 Star Region and she is the first woman to have beaten Giorgia Meloni who, by imposing the right-wing candidate, made the defeat of these elections her own name.
Brains that come back
Originally from Nuoro, she left the island at 17 to study abroad and graduated in Computer Engineering and in Information Sciences, working until her candidacy in the 5 Star Movement as an entrepreneur and manager.
In December 2018 she was named among the Italian Inspiring Fifty, recognition of the 50 Italian women considered the most influential in the world of technology. The right face to change the face of the Movement: a “return brain” profile who after his experience abroad, returns to bring what he has learned back to his homeland.
First manager and then politics
Five Star MP and vice-president, from October 2021 until shortly before the electoral campaign began, around last December, she entered the Chamber for the first time, after the 2022 political elections. Even before that, however, she had been undersecretary at the Ministry of Economic Development in Giuseppe Conte’s second government from 2019 to 2021, and then deputy minister for Economic Development in Mario Draghi’s governmentuntil October 2022.
From unknown to victory
At the beginning of the race she was not well known on the island, 35 percent of Sardinians had never heard of her. Now, she finds it difficult to walk. The program with which she won promises to re-establish the regional healthcare system that has been dismantled in recent years and to manage them more carefully projects for the exploitation of renewables on the island starting from wind power.
But her victory also depends on the fact that she managed to convince that voting for the candidate Soru, also from the centre-left but who decided to run alone, would have been of no use.
Now it’s time to work
Now Todde enjoys the moment of victory, also important at a national level because it is the first of the so-called “wide field” as the alliance between PD and M5S is called. But he will have to get back to work immediately: there are many things to do and promises made too.
