Due to the Western sanctions against Russia, which were imposed after the invasion of Ukraine, the European Union, among others, froze hundreds of billions of euros in Russian assets. However, a campaign by politicians and activists to take those assets and send the proceeds to Ukraine is gaining momentum.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated in an opinion piece in the ‘Sunday Times’ on Sunday that Western countries must show more courage in taking frozen Russian assets. Last week, the Bloomberg news agency reported that an international group of legal experts saw opportunities to take the assets without violating international law.
French President Emmanuel Macron will host a meeting in Paris on Monday to discuss aid to Ukraine, which could include the seizure of Russian assets.
