The book tells about the history of the association. “In the early twenties there wasn’t even an ice rink, but there was an association,” says former board member Koos Oosting. “There was plenty of skating on ditches, puddles and flooded meadows.” In the 1930s, during the time of unemployment, the ice rink was dug at the current location on ‘t Eng.

The area was then known as Bergveen. Lubbers: “Voorsprong was a very progressive association. In 1932 the track already had lighting, using petrol lamps. And a few years later there were even loudspeakers with music coming out of them.” According to her, the social function that the ice rink had was also important. “I’m sure a lot of relationships have germinated on the slippery slope over the years.” Former board member Koos Oosting: “I also think of the many competitions that were held here. Especially in the days when there was no artificial ice, the track in Sleen had an important regional function.”

About 470 families are currently members, from Sleen, but also from surrounding villages. “There are even several members from Emmen,” says former chairman Roelie Otten. “We always hope for frost in the winter, of course, but unfortunately we only had two skating days this year. I’m afraid there is no more, or March will still have a tail.”
