La Liga: Lewandowski saves Barca at Celta Vigo

FC Barcelona secured a lucky win at Celta Vigo thanks to a stoppage-time penalty from Robert Lewandowski. Barca, in third place, temporarily reduced the gap to league leaders Real Madrid, but the Royals can follow suit at Rayo Vallecano.

Storm veteran Lewandowski was the match winner for Barca, with a converted penalty kick in the seventh minute of added time, Lewandowski secured the Catalans’ 2-1 win at Celta Vigo on Saturday (February 17, 2024).

In his first attempt from the point he was defeated by Celta keeper Guaita, who was, however, in front of the goal line when he shot. When the penalty was due to be retaken, Lewandowski held his nerve and scored the winner.

Lewandowski scores twice in Barca win against Vigo

The Pole had already scored Barca’s lead shortly before half-time (45′). Iago Aspas (47th) equalized for Vigo immediately after the break. National goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen had no chance with the deflected shot. National team captain Ilkay Gündogan only came on in the 58th minute and experienced a thrilling stoppage time.

Real Madrid at Rayo Vallecano on Sunday

With 54 points, Barca consolidated third place in the Spanish La Liga. Leaders Real Madrid (61 points) will play against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday (2 p.m.). Second-placed Girona travel to Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening.
