Velia’s last letters to Giacomo Matteotti one hundred years later

THEThe best way to celebrate centenary of Giacomo Matteotti is to reread the letters of love and support that he exchanged with his wife Velia. She is a precious testimony of what a full union meanshappy even in bad times.

Giacomo and Velia love each other, they want to get marriedbut he is a socialist and wants to get married in the Municipality, she is Catholic but wants the religious ceremony, in the end she is convinced and writes to him: “Come, we will be happy all the same, I will be religious all the same… Nothing and no one could separate me from you”.

The signature book of an exhibition is the best way to leave a trace of your passage. Even more important if the book collects the thoughts of the new generations, those who will take up the baton and will have to pass on our memory. Well, scrolling through the attendance book of the Roman exhibition Giacomo Matteotti. Portrait in imagessome thoughts in particular are striking.

Someone comments: «A good artist!». A few months before June 10, 2024, the centenary of the assassination, there is something to reflect on. And above all there is something to do. They have been taking care of it for many years Giacomo Matteotti Foundation of Rome and the Filippo Turati Historical Studies Foundation of Florence (supported this year by the national committee for the celebrations of Matteotti’s death), promoting the “Matteotti100” webinar cycle in schools.

The topic is the figure of the martyr and his civil and moral legacy: webinars made available free of charge to all those who request them (matteotti100nellescuole.org). The seminars will be preparatory for participation in the centenary edition of the “Matteotti per le scuola” National Competition. On the eve of the assassination, Velia writes to Giacomo: “It is difficult for me to persuade myself that at this point you are not allowed any cowardice, even if it costs you your life.”
