In various Russian cities, flowers, candles and photos of Putin critic Alexei Navalny (47) are appearing on monuments that symbolize political repression. This is the case in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Novgorod, Tomsk and Novosibirsk, among others. The authorities are keeping a close eye on everything and have already arrested several people. According to the Moscow prosecutor’s office, a call is circulating on social media to take to the streets en masse in the center of the Russian capital. This was not consulted with the authorities and is therefore prohibited, it is said. People who lay flowers at the Solovetsky Stone on Lubyanka Square – near the headquarters of the Russian secret service FSB – are told via a megaphone to disperse and that no gatherings are allowed.
At least two arrests have already been made in the capital. Kristina Ilyina took to the streets with a sign that read: “Aleksey Navalny died today.” She was taken to a police station. Matvey Klastov was also arrested. He is accused of disobeying the police.
A similar situation St. Petersburg. Flowers have been laid at various monuments there. There too, the police keep an eye on everything in the center and the metro. According to local media, more than twenty people have been arrested by law enforcement, but people continue to arrive.
Several Telegram channels report this in the city Ulyanovsk750 kilometers east of Moscow, and in Novosibirsk strangers take pictures of people laying flowers and the flowers are immediately removed.
