Olli Schulz is blessed with a variety of talents. Sometimes you wonder how many thoughts, quips and gags are in his head at the same time and how he manages to sort everything out and let it out in the appropriate places. Everyone knows the podcast “Fest&Flüschig”, he was “Schulz in a Box” and is a talented actor. He also makes music and has been doing it for a very long time. He has been releasing albums since 2003, and his new work is now being released.
On VOM RAND DER ZEIT he continues his casual observations of existence in general and in particular with a light hand. You look in vain for musical rough edges and interesting junk, but he manages to create touching snapshots of his own life, tender observations and descriptions of failure and longing. Sometimes funny (“City Festival in Bonn”) or interestingly arranged with clarity and simplicity (“Highly Flied”), he celebrates songwriting in Olli style.
It’s nice to experience the sharp tongue in such a different way. Sometimes you wish he didn’t surround himself with overly professional musicians. Mistakes would be king here and there, as Knarf Rellöm likes to say. But he can tell and rhyme. The album has something forgiving about it, in the evening in front of the bathroom mirror, taking off your make-up after a strenuous day.
