The Greek government has announced tougher measures against violence at sporting events.
In order to purchase tickets, a digital identification system must be used from April. High-resolution cameras will also be installed in the stadiums for on-site identification. This is reported by the news agency “AFP”.
In Greece there have been repeated acts of violence by spectators in recent years.
Another measure that was announced was the closure of sports facilities if objects were thrown onto the field. “We don’t want stadiums to have to be closed,” said the deputy culture minister responsible for sport, Giannis Vroutsis: “But if the laws are not complied with, the games will be played without spectators.”
Just before the New Year, a police officer died in hospital from his injuries after being hit in the leg by a flare during a volleyball game.
The incident caused a stir in Greece and prompted the government in December to allow all football championship games to take place behind closed doors until February 12th.
