Blatter became acquainted with Russia’s current president as early as 2010, when Putin was still prime minister. The duo faced when the World Cup was awarded to Russia.
In 2018, when Russia finally hosted a big football party, Putin was holding a football boss at the Kremlin for dinner, even though Blatter had already been thrown out of Fifa’s leadership because of a corruption scandal.
Today, Blatter is no longer dealing with Putin, and he strongly condemns the war started by Russia. Blatter says he no longer understands Putin.
– When I watch this man on TV on different channels, he is no longer the same man. I see a man who apparently no longer knows what he’s doing. He has started a completely futile war, causing great suffering and isolating himself completely, Blatter told the Swiss To Blick magazine.
After a small draw, Fifa kicked Russia out of the World Cup qualifiers when the war began. Uefa, meanwhile, withdrew the Champions League final from St. Petersburg.
– It is quite right that the sport, after initial hesitation, reacted consistently and showed Russia a red card, Blatter said.
