The 42-year-old victim, father of two young children, died last Tuesday evening from the injuries he had sustained more than a week earlier.
In the middle of the day on Steurweg in the Rotterdam district of Hoogvliet, there was a confrontation with a 29-year-old Rotterdammer, who, according to local residents, wanted his package with an internet modem. The suspect is said to have stopped with his car at the delivery person and asked for the package.
great sadness
The parcel deliverer refused, as are the rules of his employer PostNL. He is not allowed to just drop off packages everywhere to whoever comes to ask for them. The suspect would then have “gone crazy”.
It came to an argument in which the victim fell unhappily and would have ended up on the curb. Interestingly, his attacker stayed with him until the emergency services arrived.
Unfortunately, the man eventually succumbed to his injuries. His death hit his family hard, but also the residents who knew him so well as ‘their’ parcel deliverer, who was ‘always friendly and cheerful’. There is also compassion from many others that the 42-year-old man died during his work because of something as insignificant as a package.
The Dutch Public Prosecution Service now suspects the 29-year-old suspect of manslaughter. Witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police are urged to come forward.
Touched by compassion
“We are very impressed and touched by the attention and compassion we have received,” the relatives said in a response. Local residents laid flowers at a memorial site and lit candles. The PostNL address is circulated in Hoogvliet to send funeral cards.
PostNL said in a response yesterday that it was “shocked and deeply saddened by the terrible news”. “Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and colleagues. We stand by them and will support them where we can in these difficult times. It is bizarre and unacceptable for a delivery person to experience aggression or violence while performing his or her job.”
