Algeria became the fifth Africa Cup of Nations participant to sack their coach. Djamel Belmadi, who has been in office since August 2018 and won the title with the “Wüstenfuchsen” a year later, has to leave after the preliminary round exit. In 67 games under his leadership, Algeria scored an average of 2.18 points. Jean-Louis Gasset (Ivory Coast), Chris Hughton (Ghana), Adel Amrouche (Tanzania) and Tom Saintfiet (Gambia) had previously had to retire.
Co-favorites Algeria lost 0-1 (0-1) against Mauritania on Tuesday evening and had to return home early as the last team in Group D. Yali Dellahi (37th minute) scored the only goal and ensured the country’s first win at the tournament and their first place in the knockout phase. For Algeria it is the second group exit in a row.
“I met with national coach Djamel Belmadi to discuss the consequences of this bitter exit and we mutually agreed to terminate the contract between the coach and the Algerian Football Association. We thank coach Djamel Belmadi for everything he has done for the national team and wish him good luck for the rest of his career,” said association president Walid Sadi via “X”.
