The 19-year-old American, who is seeded number 4 in Melbourne, won in three sets against the Ukrainian Marta Kostjoek: 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 6-2. It is the first time that Gauff, who won the US Open last year, has come this far in Melbourne.
