The post-champion season has proven to be difficult for Napoli so far. Rudi Garcia, successor to coach Luciano Spalletti, who resigned after the title, had to resign in November after 16 games and a points average of 1.75 points; successor Walter Mazzarri only managed five wins from the first twelve games. Even though they survived the group phase of the Champions League and met FC Barcelona in the round of 16, qualification for international business via the league is in danger. In the cup, the champions failed prematurely in the round of 16 against newly promoted Frosinone. Since September 2023, the club has lost around 90 million euros in squad value as a result of the weak season (for statistics).

During the week, Saudi media linked Mourinho to Al-Shabab FC and reported that an agreement had already been reached for a short-term takeover. However, according to reports from England and Italy, the two-time Champions League winner sees his future in Europe. According to the Times, Naples could become Mourinho’s eleventh coaching position and third job in the Italian upper house.

AS Roma parted ways with the Portuguese last Monday. The Giallorossi had previously remained winless in three games in a row and had had their worst season in almost 20 years up to that point. After 20 games, Roma were in ninth place in Serie A with 29 points; the last time things went worse was in the 2002/03 season under Fabio Capello (tenth with 27 points).
