Green Day have commented on the latest allegations. The Californian rock band was accused of having an “anti-American” stance. In one Interview with the Los Angeles Times Singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong commented: “If we didn’t care about this country, we wouldn’t say anything.” He continued: “I’m holding back from getting into bed with any politician. Not that I’ve ever been asked. So people may see one side of us as anti-American, so they keep an arm’s length away.”
Origin of the discrepancies
The allegations related to a concert that Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool played a few weeks ago. At her New Year’s Eve appearance as part of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” the trio changed a lyric from the song “American Idiot”. Instead of “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” it was “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda”. This reference to Donald Trump’s motto “Make America great again” was met with criticism in some quarters. Tech billionaire Elon Musk also commented on his platform X.
Green Day: Political position
This wasn’t the first time Green Day had spoken out against former President Trump. At the 2016 American Music Awards, they encouraged the audience to chant “No Trump, no KKK, so fascist USA.” In August 2023, they also sold T-shirts with Donald Trump’s mugshot embedded in the cover of the album Nimrod (1997). Although the band simply underlined their already known political stance with the new, adapted lyrics, descriptions as “anti-American” followed.
