A fire broke out in a house on Voltastraat in Hoogeveen this evening. The fire started in or near the chimney and spread towards the attic and the ground floor.
The fire brigade, which was called around 6.15 pm, is still extinguishing the fire because firefighters cannot enter the house. This is considered too dangerous because the wooden attic floor is on fire. It is not known how long the fire will last.
The damage to the house in Voltastraat is ‘significant’, according to a spokesperson for the safety region. The expansion also caused smoke and water damage downstairs. The fire brigade was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the neighbors, although that house was also damaged.
The residents of both addresses have left their homes and cannot return for the time being. Whether one of the homes is also uninhabitable remains to be seen later.
The fire caused a lot of smoke development in the early evening. A plume of smoke was clearly visible in part of Hoogeveen. Asbestos may have been released during the fire.
It is not clear how the fire could have started.
