Tas shiny as they are, unfortunately, polluting: and so, since last October 17th, the European Union has said enough to glitter. At the moment, The sale of only free, loose, the classics for decoration, but also for make-up. Those who, by applying them on the eyes for a beautiful sparkling make-up, end up all over the face, on the floor, on the coat… The “eternity” of their brilliance is their condemnation: the European Union announcement, part of the project “Green Deal”, it is a necessary step to succeed reduce microplastic pollution by 30 percent by 2030.
Glitter makeup for New Year’s Eve, they are not (all) prohibited
It’s glitter revenge. “Assault on supplies”: the British Guardian reports (even) sales spikes in loose glitter in Germany. Because “take everything away from us, but not the magic of their glamour”, we read on social media. This despite the stop on sales is immediate only for loose ones, and therefore not absolute: Cosmetic glitter for make-up and nails will remain on the market until 16 October 2025. Make-up will no longer have to contain them infused into the textures by 2035. Rinse-off cosmetics (oils, gels, etc.), by 2027.
In short, the cosmetics has some time to find biodegradable alternatives to these specks of light born in the 1930s due to a breakdown in a machine that cut metallized cellulose.

Today they are made of PVC, polyester and aluminium, in other words, bright plastic. It should be emphasized, however, that there are biodegradable, soluble, natural and inorganic glitter which are not considered microplastics and therefore can continue to be sold.
At least for this New Year’s Eve, therefore, no prohibition on daring a sparkling make-up. But valid alternatives, if desired, are already there.
Light from the eyes
The new generation eyeshadows ensure maximum brightness even without specks. They contain spherical color pigments that reflect light and micronized powders such as mica of mineral or synthetic origin, from ultra pearlescent rendering.
