Sevilla FC is deep in crisis and is already presenting its third coach this season.
The coaching chair at the Spanish European Cup perennial winners FC Sevilla currently resembles an ejector seat. After a veritable crisis, the embarrassing exit in the Champions League and the fall to 17th place in the LaLiga table, the third coach of the current season was hired in Quique Sánchez Flores.
The new man is expected to fill the role of coach until 2025 – but whether he fulfills his contract remains to be seen.
Sanchez Flores chose state-bearing words to make clear the gravity of his task: “We want to convey emotions, passion and hope for success. It is the only mission we have at Sevilla. It is a real challenge.”
The new head coach emphasized that he wants to change the face of the team: “We want to see a team that is competitive, believes in its possibilities and the players believe in the level they have.” And if something goes wrong, “we have to check it. And we are wrong. And I will take the time it takes to make a change and achieve something great.”
Sevilla FC fires coach after two months
The Andalusians had previously parted ways with José Luis Mendilibar and most recently Diego Alonso this season. The record winner of the UEFA Cup and the Europa League (seven titles) only has 13 points in LaLiga after their seventh defeat of the season. After the 3-0 defeat against Getafe FC last Saturday, Alonso had to leave.
The Uruguayan only took up his position at Sevilla FC at the beginning of October as Mendilibar’s successor. Under his leadership, Sevilla won the Europa League in the final against AS Roma last May. In the current Champions League competition, the traditional club was eliminated from European business last Wednesday as fourth in the group without a win.
One person who has so far not been able to meet the great expectations at Sevilla FC is Real Madrid icon Sergio Ramos (37). At the beginning of September, the four-time Champions League winner returned to the club that trained him between 1997 and 2006.
Central defender Ramos, who previously spent two disappointing years at Paris St. Germain, was the star transfer in the summer. Those in charge wanted to sell it as the return of the prodigal son, but encountered a lot of headwind – not for sporting reasons.
Sergio Ramos causes trouble
Ramos was a red flag among the Andalusians’ fans. His departure to hated Madrid rivals in 2006 was seen as a betrayal by supporters. And Ramos stood out as a provocateur during several of Los Blancos’ guest appearances at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.
In 2018, wearing the Galactic jersey, he cheered extensively for a brace in the game in Seville in front of the home corner and afterwards said that the Sevilla supporters did not deserve his respect. When he returned, Ramos struck a conciliatory tone: “I made mistakes and I want to take the opportunity to apologize for them,” he promised the fans during his introduction.
But the relationship still seems strained. It doesn’t change that Ramos is now the most dangerous defender in the Champions League with 17 goals. He couldn’t prevent the 1-2 defeat at RC Lens with his goal – nor the early exit from the premier class. A disgrace for the fans of Sevilla FC who are used to success.
