Experts have called for urgent stabilization of the 12th-century Garisenda Tower in the center of the Italian city of Bologna in a scientific report. The Italian newspapers ‘La Repubblica’ and ‘Corriere della Sera’ wrote this on Friday. “The lifespan of the tower expires in 2021,” it said.

In the study, the experts point out new cracks in and the increased tilt of the tower. Engineers have been describing the situation as code red, the highest alert level, for more than a month.
“We cannot say with certainty that nothing will happen to the tower,” said Amedeo Bellini, an architect on the committee. According to him, the city government must take action as soon as possible.
Square cordoned off last month
Bologna’s two leaning towers, Garisenda and Asinelli, are one of the most famous tourist attractions in the Italian city. But the smaller 48-metre Garisenda tower has been raising concerns for some time. The tower leans more than three meters.
Authorities cordoned off the square under the two towers last month due to cracks and unusual fluctuations. The square will probably suddenly remain closed for a few years.
