The Northern Lights can be seen in various places in our province on Sunday evening. It is not often that the pink glow is so clearly visible to the naked eye. “This is quite special, yes,” says weatherman Wouter van Bernebeek. Haven’t seen it yet? The northern lights will probably still be visible occasionally in the coming hours.

Van Bernebeek stands with his camera at the Kraaijenbergse Plassen in Cuijk on Sunday evening. There he captures the purple-pink glow. “You can now see it almost everywhere in Brabant. There was a peak between half past six and seven o’clock, when the light was clearly visible. That was very special. After that it was back every now and then, but not as beautiful anymore. like then,” he says.

“The weather has to be good.”

The colored glow in the sky is caused by electrically charged particles from the sun colliding with the atmosphere at high speed. This produces pink and green light phenomena. Van Bernebeek knew that the Northern Lights were coming on Sunday, so he went to Cuijk well prepared.

“These electrically charged particles travel to Earth for two days, so we knew for two days that there was a chance to see the Northern Lights. Of course, we always have to wait and see how things turn out. The weather, for example, has to be good,” says Van Bernebeek. .

“The color was really strong.”

It turned out well, because the northern lights can be seen in many places in Brabant on Sunday. “It is quite special how easy it is to see with the naked eye. I think the peak is now over, but if you are lucky you can still see it tonight or tonight. There may still be peaks of five or ten minutes.” , the weatherman knows.

Several Brabanders have already seen the light on Sunday evening. It resulted in many beautiful photos. Niels Sommers, for example, saw the light above Nuland and Geffen around a quarter past six for about twenty minutes. “The color was really strong and even moved a little at times,” he says.
