Storm Ciarán moved north during the rainy night from Thursday to Friday. But: it is not quiet yet.

There will also be strong winds blowing on Friday, from the southwest, with gusts of up to 75 kilometers per hour and we will be dealing with showers. Code yellow has been issued for the provinces of North Holland and South Holland. It will be 10 to 12 degrees. Weeronline reports this.

Gradually dry from the south

Friday morning it will be mainly cloudy and it will be quite wet, especially in the west and northwest. The rain will move away to the north and from the south it will gradually become dry in more and more places. There are still showers here and there. The wind blows from the southwest moderate to quite strong.

From noon onwards it will be dry in many places and the sun can break through. Even around that time it can still be quite windy. The temperature will rise to 13 degrees locally on Friday, a very normal temperature for early November.

Showers will continue to move over the west and north of the country during the night from Friday to Saturday. Inland it will often remain dry. In the coastal provinces it will continue to rain for a while, but elsewhere in the country it will be mainly dry and clearing up. The temperature will drop to 8 or 9 degrees.

Flooding affects traffic

Although storm Ciarán has now left the Netherlands, traffic in South Holland is struggling with flooding on the highways. Flooding is particularly severe around Rotterdam. Rain has now led to lane closures on a few highways.

In general, traffic on Dutch highways experiences few problems on Friday morning, mainly because there is always less commuting traffic, says a spokesperson for the ANWB. “But it is quite disappointing now, especially around Rotterdam.”

There is also flooding on the A20 towards Gouda due to heavy rainfall, as a result of which two lanes are closed before the Terbregseplein junction. The same thing happened on the A12 from The Hague to Utrecht. Two lanes at the Gouwe aqueduct were closed for a short time. “That is also a low road. The water collects there,” said the ANWB spokesperson.

In North Holland, where the only province in the Netherlands still has a code yellow, there are not many problems on the road. “That code has been off for the whole day, but it has now mainly rained in the center of the country and South Holland,” says the spokesman.

Rijkswaterstaat warns that code yellow applies to the North Holland region until Friday evening. “There may be a lot of precipitation locally due to persistent rain and showers,” Rijkswaterstaat reports on X. The precipitation can cause difficult driving conditions, the service indicates. “Adjust your driving style where necessary.”

NS: timetable restarted as normal after storm

The NS started the timetable on Friday without any major problems. This was reported by a spokesperson for the carrier. Storm Ciarán caused disruptions on several routes on Thursday, but all but one of these have now been resolved. There is only a problem between Weert and Roermond.

In Haelen, Limburg, not far from Roermond, a train crashed into a tree that had fallen on the overhead wire on Thursday afternoon. The train did not derail and no one was injured, but the resulting damage will take more time to resolve, the spokesperson said. Therefore, no trains, but express buses, will run between Weert and Roermond until at least 12 noon.

Saturday

It will remain stormy again on Saturday. There is a variety of weather types: early in the morning it still rains in the north, and then the sun shines in almost the entire country. Unfortunately not for very long, because in the second half of the morning the clouds come over from the southwest again.

During the afternoon hours the rain will spread northeastwards over the country. A few more showers will follow later in the afternoon, but in between the sun will shine for a while. The south to southeast wind is moderate to quite strong over land and strong to strong at sea and in the Wadden area, wind force 4 to 7.

More rain

It will rain again on Sunday, but the sun will also break through briefly in between. Once again a strong and somewhat gusty west to southwest wind is blowing. Above land the wind is moderate to quite strong, at sea and in the Wadden area strong to strong, with wind force 4 to 7. The temperature then also rises to 12-13 degrees.
