Football Champions League: Newcastle vs. Dortmund – live ticker – 3rd group matchday – 2023/2024

  • 45.

    9:55 p.m

    Half-time conclusion:
In the middle of a promising Dortmund attack, referee Artur Dias whistled to end the first half on time and the guests went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. BVB was good in the game right from the start, stood up to the strong Magpies and had good opportunities early on through painting and filling the pitch. At times an open exchange of blows developed in which the home team also had their opportunities. After both sides had to change once due to injury (Wilson for Isak and Özcan for Can), Felix Nmecha scored the black and yellow’s first goal of the season in the premier class shortly before half-time, rewarding his team for a very courageous first 45 minutes. We’re about to continue with the second section in rainy Newcastle!

    9:50 p.m

    End of 1st half

  • 45.

    9:49 p.m

Borussia are now on top and are pushing for the second goal against the ailing Magpies. But the next corner doesn’t lead to success either.

  • 45.

    9:49 p.m

Dortmund continues to build steam! This time Füllkrug takes a shot himself on the left side of the box, but gets stuck. In the following corner, Pope doesn’t seem particularly confident, but no further conclusion is achieved.

  • 45.

    9:48 p.m

    Official added time (minutes): 4

  • 45.

    9:46 p.m

    Felix Nmecha

Tooor for Borussia Dortmund, 0-1 by Felix Nmecha

BVB takes the lead before stoppage time is even shown! Nico Schlotterbeck wins the ball in the center circle and immediately sends Marco Reus up the pace on the left. The veteran drives and then sends Füllkrug into the box. The former Bremer player makes a strong cross at penalty level and finds Felix Nmecha, who immediately pulls the trigger just as strongly and hits it well placed into the right corner!

  • 45.

    9:45 p.m

It’s the last minute of regular playing time. After two changes due to injuries, there should be a lot more.

  • 43.

    9:44 p.m

Salih Özcan takes over Can’s position, Gregor Kobel takes over the captain’s armband.

  • 43.

    9:43 p.m

    Salih Ozcan

Substitution at Borussia Dortmund: Salih Özcan

  • 43.

    9:43 p.m

    Emre Can

Substitution at Borussia Dortmund: Emre Can

  • 42.

    9:43 p.m

Emre Can is actually trying again. But there was already a signal to the bank that a change was unavoidable. Let’s hope that the BVB captain didn’t suffer a more serious injury.

  • 41.

    9:42 p.m

Donyell Malen couldn’t get enough steam after his fifth shot on goal and only pushed the ball back to Nick Pope. The Dutchman keeps putting himself in good situations, but has done little with it so far.

  • 39.

    9:41 p.m

That doesn’t look good either! Emre Can first has to have his knee treated on the grass and then limps off the field, supported by two carers. BVB also apparently has to change in the first half.

  • 38.

    9:39 p.m

After a brilliant first 25 minutes, the game has now calmed down a bit. This may also have something to do with the fact that it is now raining heavily in Newcastle.

  • 36.

    9:38 p.m

The hosts take the free kick shortly and immediately find their way back into the box, but are unable to finish.

  • 35.

    9:36 p.m

    Marius Wolf

Yellow card for Marius Wolf (Borussia Dortmund)

Wolf has to make up for the next ball loss and hits Miguel Almirón 35 meters in front of his own goal.

  • 34.

    9:36 p.m

BVB has to avoid that! Schlotterbeck loses the ball deep in his own half in a risky move and Joelinton finishes from 22 meters. Luckily from Dortmund’s point of view, the Brazilian doesn’t hit his shot correctly.

  • 32.

    9:33 p.m

In return, Dortmund also keeps the ball in their own ranks for longer and looks for the gap. Malen and Wolf can’t get to the cross from the right and then Cans Chíppball goes completely wrong.

  • 30.

    9:31 p.m

The Magpies now sit in Dortmund’s half for a longer period of time and let the ball run around the penalty area. Borussia always moves well and doesn’t allow anything. Even two more corners from the hosts did not lead to success.

  • 27.

    9:28 p.m

The guests need to slowly reward themselves! BVB again plays strongly through the opposing lines, Reus serves Füllkrug in the center and he lays it down for painting. The Dutchman immediately pulls the trigger from 13 meters and shoots at a defender again.

  • 24.

    9:26 p.m

One thing can already be said: Edin Terzić has prepared his team well for the Magpies’ fast and intense game. Borussia Dortmund held up well in every respect, even had significantly more possession of the ball and came very close to taking the lead on several occasions.

  • 22.

    9:23 p.m

Once again it is Almirón who is sent behind the Dortmund defense line with a high ball, but then does not fully hit his direct shot. Goal kick!

  • 20.

    9:22 p.m

Miguel Almirón moves in from the right, leaves three Dortmund players standing and then falls to the ground just behind the edge of the penalty area as if struck by lightning. Yes, Schlotterbeck was nearby, but Almirón only felt the contact in his imagination. Accordingly, there is no penalty.

  • 19.

    9:20 p.m

After winning the ball, both teams look for a direct route to the opponent’s goal at full speed. Dortmund pushes through Sabitzer again, then Malen’s next shot is blocked for a corner. This then brings in nothing.

  • 16.

    9:18 p.m

With Isak things actually don’t go any further. Callum Wilson, who scored 4-0 against Crystal Palace at the weekend, takes over.

  • 15.

    9:17 p.m

    Callum Wilson

Substitution at Newcastle United: Callum Wilson

  • 15.

    9:16 p.m

    Alexander Isaac

Substitution at Newcastle United: Alexander Isak

  • 15.

    9:16 p.m

Following Dortmund’s second corner, Malen sent the ball crashing from the back a good meter over the crossbar. Dortmund have found their way into the game really well and have had better chances so far.

  • 13.

    9:15 p.m

This does not look good! Alexander Isak sits on the floor and signals that he needs treatment. The former Dortmund player must have been injured without any influence from the opponent.

  • 11.

    9:13 p.m

Then the NUFC again! The home team combine into the box on the left and Anthony Gordon appears in front of Gregor Kobel. The shot from a tight angle comes powerfully, but not too well placed, and Dortmund’s keeper blocks it away.

  • 10.

    9:12 p.m

Double chance for BVB! After winning the ball in his own half, Sabitzer picks up the pace on the left side and then brings the ball half-high inside. Malen takes the ball directly and fails because of Pope, who reacts strongly. The ball ends up at Füllkrug, but his direct shot from ten meters also defuses Newcastle’s keeper.

  • 7.

    9:08 p.m

Newcastle is putting pressure on us! First Hummels has to clear the ball with his head in desperate need, then Can can only defuse the situation at the expense of the first corner. Kobel then safely punches these out.

  • 5.

    9:07 p.m

Things get really busy right from the start. Both sides are looking for a quick way forward and are incredibly present in the duels.

  • 3.

    9:05 p.m

The home team also had a good opportunity. Joelinton turns two Dortmund players on the left corner of the penalty area and fires into the far corner. Kobel takes off and safely parries to the side.

  • 2.

    9:04 p.m

What a start! After just over 60 seconds, Donyell has the first huge chance for Borussia! After a long ball, the Dutchman is through and moves into the box on the left, but his unplaced low shot from ten meters is missed by keeper Nick Pope.

  • 1.

    9:01 p.m

Let’s go! As usual, the Magpies play in black and white, Dortmund all in yellow.

  • 1.

    9:00 p.m

    Game start

  • 20:58

The game will be led by a Portuguese team led by referee Artur Dias. The referees are currently accompanying the two teams onto the field and the famous notes of the Champions League anthem can be heard. In just a few minutes the ball will finally roll in St. James’ Park!

  • 20:42

Newcastle coach Eddie Howe doesn’t want to take bottom-placed Dortmund lightly. “This is another real tough test for us,” warned the 45-year-old and put the game back into perspective. “It was clear from the start that this would be a tough and balanced group. We are happy to be in the middle of it and today is an absolutely key game for us.”

  • 8:35 p.m

BVB coach Edin Terzić has great respect for today’s opponent. “We saw against Paris what Newcastle are capable of,” warned the Dortmund coach, but at the same time also stated: “They are first, but only three points away from us. You can see how close everything is in this group together.” To be able to celebrate internationally for the first time this season, Emre Can has a recipe ready. “It won’t be easy to play football there. But we are Dortmund, we have to go there with our chests wide open and try to win the game.”

  • 20:21

Above all, the Magpies have one thing that BVB is currently sorely lacking: a goalscorer. And this is, of all people, a former Dortmund player. Alexander Isak has already scored six times in nine league games, while nobody at Borussia has scored more than three goals so far. The center forwards Füllkrug and Haller have even fewer hits to their name. So who today is supposed to ensure that you score at least one more goal than your opponent and thus maintain your chance of progressing?

  • 8:09 p.m

A look at the lineups: The hosts have to cope with two bitter defeats today. Full-back Julian Ryerson is ill, Julian Brandt has to take a break after suffering a blow to his calf. Marcel Sabitzer takes over for him in midfield, Ramy Bensebaini plows the left lane. Young central defender Hendry Blank is in the BVB professional squad for the first time. Eddie Howe, on the other hand, also makes two changes after the clear win over Palace. Miguel Almirón and Alexander Isak start up front for Jacob Murphy and Callum Wilson (both bench).

  • 8:06 p.m

At Newcastle United the conditions are completely different. In their first participation in the premier league in 20 years, the Magpies proved with a brilliant 4-1 win against PSG that they are now one of the absolute top clubs in the Premier League and Europe. Since there was also a point against Milan, Newcastle are currently at the top of Group F with four points and could already take a huge step towards the round of 16 with a three point win today. The guests also celebrated a successful dress rehearsal at the weekend and swept Crystal Palace off the pitch 4-0.

  • 20:02

After the opening defeat at Paris Saint-Germain (0-2) and the goalless draw in the home game against Milan, Borussia is already under a lot of pressure before today’s duel. If you lose, you would fall seriously behind in the fight for second place, which entitles you to advance. Dortmund can draw confidence from their last appearances in the league. Black and yellow have recently won four times in a row and have established themselves in the top group. Most recently there was a 1-0 home win against Werder Bremen on Friday.

  • 8:00 p.m

Hello and welcome to the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening! Borussia Dortmund wants to finally get their first win in the third group game in order to stay in the race for the round of 16. At 9 p.m. BVB hosts league leaders Newcastle United.
