Cherundolo promotes MLS salary cap relaxation

LAFC coach

According to former Bundesliga pro Steven Cherundolo, the MLS should say goodbye to its strict salary cap in favor of its development. “I don’t think the salary cap will go away completely, and I don’t think it would be particularly wise either,” said the Los Angeles Football Club coach and longtime professional at Hannover 96 of the German Press Agency before the start of the season Weekend. “But a little loosened up,” he thinks it’s good.

“If clubs want to invest to win, I think it would be good if they were allowed to do that. I think that will happen in the next few years.” Major League Soccer has developed well in recent years with a slow growth concept. “But I think the public, the financiers and the fans are ready to let things loosen up a bit so that the clubs can invest more themselves,” said Cherundolo, who is about to start his first season as head coach of a first division club.

In the MLS, there is a salary cap for each team. Last season, that was around five million US dollars. The salary of up to three players is only a small part and can therefore be significantly higher. However, all others in the squad must not exceed the limit.

Cherundolo’s MLS debut: ‘The best place for me’

Cherundolo is looking forward to his debut season in MLS. “As a coach, this is the best place for me at the moment. I think what I see and understand as a coach can be implemented here. Football in the USA has come a long way, the league has come a long way, but you can still make a difference compared to many clubs in Germany,” said the 43-year-old. “The sheet is no longer completely white, but almost, and that excites me.”
