Abandoned European Championship qualifying game between Belgium and Sweden was considered a draw

After a terrorist act in Brussels

The European Championship qualifier between Belgium and Sweden, which was canceled after the fatal attack on two Swedish fans in Brussels, will be classified as a draw. “Each team will be credited with one point,” the European Football Union UEFA said on Thursday following a decision by the Executive Committee. The game on October 16th was stopped at half-time when the score was 1-1, at the request and with the consent of both teams.

UEFA also stated that bans served with the game were still being paid off. Individual warnings from the first half of the canceled game also remain. Only Mattias Svanberg received a yellow card. It can therefore also be assumed that Viktor Gyökeres for Sweden and Romelu Lukaku will be counted as goalscorers, although the association does not address this in its announcement. One reason not to restart the game was that the result had no relevance to the outcome of the qualifying group. Sweden can no longer qualify, but the Belgians are already certain to take part in the 2024 European Championship finals in Germany.

Previously, two Swedish fans were killed by gunfire in Brussels and another person was injured. The Belgian government classified the attack as an act of terrorism. The suspected perpetrator, a 45-year-old Tunisian, was shot dead by Belgian police on Tuesday after a long escape.
