Robert Molenaar (trainer of NAC O21 and former trainer Volendam from 2015-2017): “This is a step as it should be. Every now and then we talk on the phone and then interested foreign clubs from England or Italy also came forward. Only then there is the danger that if you do not perform you will be left out of the picture. Now I congratulated him via the app, because this is the trajectory you want to go through and if he continues to develop in this way, the Dutch National Team will also come into the picture. I have every confidence in Joey.”

“Knowing Joey, he doesn’t get nervous so easily”

Alex Plat (went through the youth academy at FC Volendam together with Veerman): “This is just a great transition. As he himself said: ‘to the number one in the Netherlands’. It could be worse, haha. It was about to happen that he was going to make the move, given his development. Joey has said that to me too. We often sit together with a few former teammates for a cup of coffee. Knowing Joey, he doesn’t get nervous so easily. it doesn’t matter where he plays. When he’s at the ball, he puts them everywhere. I think he’s going to get even better.”

FC Volendam

Joey Veerman made his professional football debut in September 2016 under coach Robert Molenaar in the first of FC Volendam.

Robert Miller: “How he plays on the square in Volendam, he also plays in De Kuip. At that time he played very uninhibited and it often just went well, but that open-mindedness is also his strength. He does not get upset easily. And it soon seemed as if he had been playing in the base of Volendam for years. He quickly adapted to the level. And I expect that he will now do the same at PSV. He knows almost no pressure and can handle expectations well. His imperturbability is so good. It is sometimes said that he looks laconic, but I absolutely do not think he is. .”

Alex Flat: “We played together all our youth at FC Volendam. He accelerated to the first. We almost lost each other there, because Joey went a little faster. That boy can play football so well. His cross balls are always good, you can always respond to him, with one or two men in the back. It doesn’t matter. He always does something with it. He now also performs his defensive duties well. In the past, Jari Vlak and I often had to clean up. It’s good that he has picked up on that. That is also necessary if you want to make that step to PSV. And then the Dutch national team? In the short term I don’t know, but in the longer term I think it will happen. I will put my money on that to deploy.”

Pitfall

Robert Miller: “I strongly advise against driving back and forth on a daily basis. All his choices at the moment should be about development and performance and that does not include the many hours in the car. After a training or competition you have to give your body give rest and recover. So it is better for Joey to live in Eindhoven.”

“He’s not used to sitting on the couch”

Alex Plat: “It is a prejudice that people from Volendam cannot live outside Volendam. I think he will feel at home there. If he wants to be home for a day, he just goes back to Volendam. That will do him good. He has to do it.” where he feels good. Joey is really a family person or wants to be with his friends. That will now become a bit less. At Heerenveen he went up and down a lot. We see each other every week. The only pitfall I can imagine “I can say that he may not play at the beginning. There are enough good players around PSV, so he may have to be patient. He is just not used to sitting on the bench.”
