Bono sang “Pride (in the Name of Love)” and also rewritten the lyrics.
At the most recent of their “Sphere” concerts (October 8, 2023) as part of the ACHTUNG-BABY residency, U2 commemorated the deaths in Israel in the wake of the Hamas attacks, since which the country has been attacked on several fronts at the same time.
“Given what happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence might seem silly, even ridiculous,” Bono said on stage in Las Vegas as The Edge played the first chords of the song that followed.
“But our prayers have always been about the desire for peace and non-violence. But our hearts… and our anger…” – then the 63-year-old’s voice faltered. And it reminds us of the massacre at the Trance festival. “These beautiful kids… at a music festival…”. Bono then asked the audience to sing along.
The band sang “Pride (in the Name of Love)”, the hit from the 1984 album THE UNFORGETTABLE FIRE, which deals with the assassination of Martin Luther King and is an anthem for peace. Bono rewritten the song: “On October 7th, as the sun is rising on a desert sky / stars of David / They took your life / but they couldn’t take your pride”.
Massacre in Israel
Over 260 mostly young people were killed in an attack by the Palestinian terrorist militia Hamas at a rave not far from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023. Others were kidnapped while the digital camera was running. At the Universo Parallelo Festival, two German acts, Protonica and Ectogasmics, were also on the festival billing.
