Olympic champion in balance beam gymnastics McKayla Maroney27, says that his life has become very painful due to severe insomnia symptoms.
– When this was at its worst this summer, I slept ten whole nights in three months, he writes.
The cause of insomnia is hypersensitivity to histamine.
Histamine is a neurotransmitter in the body that is important for the immune system and digestion.
According to Maroney, certain nutrients cause him extreme fatigue and strange, neuropathic symptoms at night. He classifies spinach, almonds and potatoes as such.
– I’d like to call it a nightmare, but you have to sleep to have nightmares.
Turn for the better
Now he has changed his diet to get rid of insomnia. The situation has clearly taken a turn for the better.
– I’ve seen so many doctors to get this figured out and I’m still a little ashamed of all the strange diagnoses and ailments. I just want to be normal.
Maroney became an Olympic champion in the gymnastics team competition in London 2012. In the same games, he won silver in the vault.
The American was crowned world champion three times. Maroney ended his sports career in 2016.
