In the 3-2 win in front of 41,000 in the Weser Stadium, Maximilian Beier (8th), Grischa Prömel (29th) and Marius Bülter (90+2nd) scored the goals for the guests, Romano Schmid (17th) and Jens Stage (90.+1) scored for Bremen. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team climbed to fourth place with their fourth win in their fourth away game, while Bremen slipped to 14th place. Naby Keita, the star acquisition from Liverpool FC, celebrated his starting eleven debut for Bremen.
Bremen defense without access
When it came to the first two goals conceded, the Werder defense was quite amateurish. In the first, Hoffenheim undermined the Bremen defense with two passes from Kevin Vogt and Grischa Prömel, and Beier didn’t miss the chance in front of the goal. For the second goal, the Green-Whites put far too little pressure on the ball-carrier Robert Skov, who was able to calmly pass the ball to Grischa Prömel. He also had all the time in the world to get the ball ready to score.
At the break, Bremen were significantly behind in terms of statistics in terms of running performance, tackles, passing rate and ball possession. Schmid’s remarkable goal was almost lost. Through Mitchell Weiser and Marvin Ducksch, the Bremen team combined nicely and nicely, but unfortunately they did that far too rarely. And the bearer of hope, Keita, was only noticed in the first round because of a rude foul on Vogt.
Werder stronger, but not strong enough
Coach Ole Werner’s team came out of the dressing room tidier after the break. Justin Njinmah was only just offside when he was supposed to equalize. However, Hoffenheim again had the great chance to score the next goal. Vogt failed in front of Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka. Beier and Wout Weghorst had released the defender and allowed five Bremen players to run into space with a simple pass.
Werder then turned up the heat, increased the tempo and really tried hard. Aggressiveness, risk – the team tried everything. But in the end there was simply a lack of precision, penetration or patience going forward. So Bremen’s chances came to nothing or failed because of TSG goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Stage’s equalizer to make it 2-2 came in stoppage time, and while Bremen were still happy about winning the point, Bülter struck in a wild final phase. Hoffenheim survived the rest of injury time with luck and skill. For Werder it was a devastating final after a great fight.
