Almost three years ago, the attempt to found a Super League failed miserably. Now there are apparently new plans that would mean the end of the Champions League.
According to the Spanish newspaper “El Pais”, UEFA and the ECA, an independent lobby group for European football clubs, are planning to introduce three new leagues: the Super League, the Europa League and the Aspirant League.
18 teams should play in each league. A system with promotion and relegation is planned. Between the first and second leagues there should be two teams that change leagues – between the second and third leagues there should be four teams.
A possible relegation should not only depend on the performance within the season. The results of the last few years are also included.
Super League from 2027?
Each league should initially be played in two groups so that the clubs’ schedules are not overloaded. Afterwards there is a final phase.
According to the report, the introduction of the new leagues will not be possible until 2027 at the earliest. The plans will be discussed at the next meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee. If the three top European leagues actually come, it would mean the end for the champions, the Europe and the Conference League.
The new competition should have no impact on national gaming operations. The only thing that is conceivable is that clubs that do well in the domestic league receive points for their ranking in the European league.
The Super League plans from three years ago would have represented direct competition to the Champions League. Twelve top European football clubs announced a Super League in spring 2021. After just 48 hours of fan protests and association threats, the project was over.
