The European golfers had to score 14.5 points for victory. The American golfers needed 14 points to defend the title in Rome. They had won that two years earlier in Wisconsin with a 19-9 score.
Team Europe started the last day with a lead of 10.5 – 5.5. The Europeans had edged out to 6.5 – 1.5 on the first day.
