After a weak start to the season with 16th place in the 2nd Bundesliga, Schalke 04 has drawn conclusions in the coaching bench. On Wednesday, the “Royal Blues” announced that Thomas Reis and his assistant Markus Gellhaus had been released with immediate effect. The club cited disappointing performances and a lack of prospects for success as reasons. Matthias Kreutzer – previously also an assistant coach – is taking over responsibility on an interim basis.
“After the morale win against Magdeburg, our expectation was that we would see further progress at St. Pauli. Instead, we had to accept a significant step backwards,” explains Peter Knäbel, member of the board and responsible for sports. “We have used the last few days for intensive consultations and have come to the conclusion that we have to take this step right now in the interests of the club. Our goal is to break the overall negative trend since the start of the season.”

Sports director André Hechelmann added: “We did everything until the end to work our way out of the sporting slump together with Thomas Reis. However, after the internal discussions of the past few days, we lacked the necessary conviction that we could stop the negative development in the current constellation and thus be successful in the short and medium term. That’s why we decided to take a new path.”
